Build a career in
Civil & Infrastructure Design.
Infrastructure work is unforgiving about accuracy. A corridor design carries earthwork quantities that turn into real money, and a surface model that is wrong is wrong all the way to site.
Civil Design Engineer · Highway Design Engineer · Quantity Engineer · Site Design Coordinator
What this work actually involves
This path moves you from 2D drafting into 3D corridor modelling and quantity extraction — the skills that infrastructure consultancies and contractors actively recruit for. You will work with survey data, build surfaces, set out alignments and profiles, and produce the quantities a contractor prices from.
If you like work where the answer is either right or demonstrably wrong, this suits you.

The sequence that gets you there
Roles this leads to
| Role | What you would do |
|---|---|
| Civil Design Engineer | Produce design drawings and models for infrastructure schemes |
| Highway Design Engineer | Set out alignments, profiles and corridor geometry |
| Quantity Engineer | Extract and verify quantities from the model |
| Site Design Coordinator | Bridge design intent and site execution |
A good fit if you are
- A civil engineering student or graduate
- A site engineer wanting design-office skills
- A draughtsperson working on infrastructure schemes
- Targeting infrastructure consultancies or EPC contractors
Probably not the right start if
- You are drawn to buildings rather than infrastructure — BIM is the better path
- You want analysis and calculation as the core of your work — see Structural Engineering
